September 30 - October 4

Winter Weather
Winter is making an early visit to Calgary! With snowy days on the way, a friendly reminder to send students to school with outdoor gear (boots, parkas, mittens, hats, snow pants). We go outside every day at lunch and recess unless the weather is extreme.

Volunteer Opportunities
Bridlewood School relies on volunteers to help us with fields trips, special lunches
and Scholastic Book Fairs, just to name a few examples. We are currently putting
together a list of people who may be able to give us the gift of some of their time
for these occasions. If you are interested in supporting our school in this way,
please email us at Bridlewood@cbe.ab.ca. Please remember that all volunteers
must have a current security clearance and have completed a yearly volunteer
form. If you need to begin this process, please visit our school office during regular

office hours.

Headphones
Sometimes when students are working on computers, they would like to use the text-to-speech function when doing research. We do not have headphones for each student to have as their own. Do you have cheap earbuds or headphones that your child can keep at school? If so, would you mind sending them? It is best if you label them and a plastic ziplock type bag might be helpful as well for personal organization.

Place Value
We are learning about place value. Place value is important as it helps us understand the meaning of numbers. We use the meaning of numbers to help us make reasonable estimates and accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Students created a visual journal page to create a reminder about the value of each digit in a number. In grade 4, students need to demonstrate understand of numbers up to ten-thousand. In grade 5, student need to demonstrate understanding of numbers up to a million. Students then created questions to show their understanding of place value. Below are examples of visual journal pages and a frame for questions that students should be able to create and then answer. Students would benefit from practicing these skills at home. One suggestion is for the students to create the questions and then test their parents. Are your answers the same? Why or why not?

ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Today we learned about Phyllis Webstad and the Orange Shirt Story.  Phyllis was a little girl who went to a Residential School and when she arrived the nuns took her brand new orange shirt.  Phyllis shared her story.  She had to Say Something and today as we work towards Reconciliation we wear orange shirts - to remember Phyllis and Every Child Matters.

We created posters and scripts so we can present to the classrooms and students on Friday this week.  We will  wear an orange shirt on Tuesday October 1, 2019.

The story of Shi Shi Etko is another story about the legacy of Residential Schools and the story of a little girl and a family holding on to each other, their values, and their traditions.

ECOSYSTEMS

We continued looking to the human and natural world by doing a gallery walk and observing and reading about a variety of ecosystems.  We looked for biotic and abiotic features in the the pictures.  I can tell you what abiotic and biotic is.  I can tell you what an ecosystem is.  Ask me about the images below.

TERRY FOX

Bring a Toonie for Terry- Thursday September 26 is Bridlewood's Terry Fox run.  We run, like Terry, in the rain or snow or sun because together we are strong and can make a difference.  Make sure to dress for the weather.

Scholastic Book Order Information

Dear Parents,
Today, your child is bringing home some Scholastic Book orders. These orders provide the opportunity for you to order books and other educational items for your child. While it is entirely optional to order, your purchases do help to support and build our classroom library.

If you choose to buy any items for your child, you need to complete your order and payment information ONLINE (parentpay.scholastic.ca) and ONLY SEND THE COMPLETED ORDER FORM BACK TO SCHOOL.

Please do not send any cash or cheques to school. As your child’s teacher, I will receive a confirmation email from Scholastic Books that your payment has been received and the paper order form provides me with a record of your purchase.

Deadline for placing orders is Friday September 27, 2019 at 3:10pm. No late orders will be accepted.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks,
Jennifer and Tanya

What is Weather? What is Climate?

How are weather and climate similar and different?
We begin a look into weather and climate.  This venn diagram shows what we think we know are examples of weather and climate are.

Our Next Steps:
- What questions do we have about weather and climate?
- What do we need to know in order to understand the difference between weather and climate?
- What can we 'say' about weather?
- What can we 'say' about climate?
Determining how we will answer our questions and share what we learn.

Picture Writing Prompt- Looking at Art

Students first thought to themselves about the image above.  After a few minutes they shared what they noticed first starting with simple observations.  For instance the truck is red or I see logs on a truck and a trail of animals.  After this students began sharing what they thought the message of this picture might be and why.  Some questions to prompt student thinking:
Why do you think that?
What makes you think that?
What clues are in the picture that you used?
Can you tell me more about that idea?

After sharing ideas students created a story plan for their own individual story.  Stories were collected on Friday.

Friday Teachers - The Game of Golf

Our teachers (Ms. Hall and Ms. Leong)  taught us the game of Golf.  This game requires a little strategy and a little luck.  For each hole we have to add up our cards to try and get the lowest score.  After 8 holes we would need to total all our holes to determine the winner.  We used our addition skills and tried to use strategy to get the lowest score.
