February 3 - 7

Request for Crochet Hooks/Knitting Needles for science/art
In science, one of our learning outcomes it to document/record weather over a period of time. We would like to make a weather scarf to accomplish this learning outcome. In order to create a weather scarf, we will need to learn the skill of crocheting or knitting. We will also need either a crochet hook (preferably - 5mm or H) or a set of knitting needles for each student. We are hopeful that students will be able to borrow the required supplies from a grandparent, parent, etc. so we can create a weather scarf. We would also welcome donations of yarn to help us. We have some yard at the school, but will probably need different colours.  If students could bring these things by Monday, Feb 10th, we can start our work next week.

We will work towards setting up a legend to help us with what each colour we use will represent. We will share that once we have it all figured out.

Here are a couple of scarves that we can use for inspiration:

-When? (date)
-Where?

2 Important events:
-What happened?
-Who was involved?
          - How were they involved? What did they do?
-Why was this important?

You are expected to work independently during this research time and you
will be handing in your research books at the end of class.

Bell, "Let's Talk" - "When it comes to mental health, every action helps."
We are wearing our hats today to show we care and that a small action can have a BIG impact.
It is important to take care of ourselves and others.
How?
- call a friend and tell them you are thinking about them
- do something for you (colouring?)

Starting our research to build our understanding and background knowledge of the different regions of Canada.
Do landforms impact who lives in each region?
Do resources impact who lives in each region?
Who does live in each region? What are their stories? How did they, "Say Something"?

Buddies! We read the story, "The Good Egg" and continued our conversation about looking after ourselves and our mental health. We used our thumbprints to create pictures that showed the things we do or can do to take care of ourselves.

Grade 5 investigated volume today. We learned that volume is how much space something takes up in 3-dimensions. It is also measured in cubic units (i.e., cubic centimeters, cubic meters, etc) Students built an object that had a volume of 10 cubic units. Are all of these objects accurate? That is, do they all have a volume of 10 cubic units? How do you know? What is your evidence?

Grade 4 investigated prisms. They talked about how about how a 2D shape is different from a 3D shape. Then they talked about how a prism is named. Students predicted which 3D shape was a true prism - one idea shared was that a prism has 6 faces,  and another thought shared was that a prism has a rectangular base.  After viewing a brief video students learned the three properties that a prism has:
1) parallel and congruent faces
2) cross section looks like the bases
3) named for the base shape

Did you know you can access Tumblebooks at home from the Calgary Public Library? Here is the link... https://calgarylibrary.ca/read-learn-and-explore/digital-library/tumblebook-library/

Focusing on Comprehension:
"Students don't automatically comprehend just because they can read the words."
- opportunities to practice reading and viewing (more is better)
- reread
- annotate or create thinking notes (highlight, jot notes, comments, or questions in the margins)
- survey (read ahead or skim)
- connect (text-to-text, text-to-self, text-to-world)
- monitor (Does this make sense? Does this sound like language? Do I know what is happening in the text?)
- talk to yourself (I wonder why he's doing that? Okay, I get that now. I've seen that word before. This doesn't make any sense. I better reread this part.)
- retell, summarize, or paraphrase

Don't forget to dress for the weather! Winter coats, snow pants, winter boots, mittens, toques are all super important to keep us warm and safe when traveling to and from school. We are staying inside for recess this week as the weather is too cold.

BWS Yearbooks
Bridlewood School is very fortunate this year as one of our parents, who is a photographer and graphic artist/web designer,
has generously volunteered her talent and time to create our yearbook. So many thanks to Melinda Gombert for this.
Melinda has just finished designing the cover for the yearbook.

If you haven’t purchased a yearbook yet and would like to do so, you can do through accessing your fees online
(MyCBE/PowerSchool account).  You will need to go to the Goods/Services tab to locate the optional fees,
double click the yearbook line, the fee will then attach to your account, or return this invoice indicating
that you wish to purchase the year book and the fee will be added to your account from the school office.
Deadline for purchase is February 28, 2020.

Our 7 Teachings

Ms. Jasmine demonstrated how to build a simple thermometer. We will be building our own next week. We are using a plastic bottle (please bring one if you have one), a straw, water, food colouring, and modeling clay.

Some questions we thought about after Ms. Jasmine's demonstration:
1. How effective was the thermometer?
2. How reliable would our homemade thermometer be?
3. How easy was our homemade thermometer to construct?
4. Are there any safety risks with our homemade thermometer?
5. What materials will be used? Can it be cheaply made? Does it use recycled materials?

Today we ideated to come up with ideas for the ingenuity challenge. Our problem is how to move people and resources without fuel. You can see the materials we have access to for our designs as well as some of our ideas that we are thinking about. We can't wait to get started with our building.

Students demonstrated their comprehension of the novel they read with a partner or in a small group by choosing an event from the story and creating a sculpture of the event. Students also had to write about why this event was important to the story.
Students were able to show their understanding of the novel they read by looking at one of the characters in the story or creating a book mark with a picture of an event and ten things about the book.

Another way for students to demonstrate their understanding was to make a picture book out of their novel. This required students to curate the most important events of the story.
