March 16, 2020

Good morning Grade Four/Five Students and Families of Bridlewood School,

We wanted to reach out to everyone this morning to say that as we sit here in our classrooms, we are thinking of all of you. We come to work each day because we love working with your kids and spending our days with them.

At this time, we are waiting for further instructions from the CBE as far as our next steps. Right now, it is too early to speculate on anything. Please know that we will be in touch as soon as we have more information about what our next steps will look like.

Though many families may be unable to physically get together, let’s try to think of ways that we can continue to spread kindness and cheer at this difficult time. For example, you could draw and colour some pictures of something that brings happiness to you and your family to post in your front window. We hope this kindness and joy will spread and give strength when it is most needed.

Stay tuned for updates that will be sent, as more information becomes available. Please reach out if you have any questions and concerns.

Much love,

"No matter how much pressure you feel at work, if you could find ways to relax for at least five minutes every hour, you'd be more productive." ~ Dr. Joyce Brothers

Can you relax at a moment's notice - anytime, anywhere? If not, this is a skill you need. It restores your energy, sharpens your focus, boosts your creativity, and makes you more productive at work, at school, or wherever you are. Try this relaxation technique:
1. Sit as comfortably as you can and close your eyes.
2. Take a long, slow, deep breath through your nose. Slowly count to 5 as you inhale.
3. Breathe out through your nose. Slowly count backwards from 5 as you exhale.
4. Repeat this slow rhythmic breathing and counting for 3-5 minutes.

Today I will try to relax for brief periods throughout the day.

Here is a resource for home created by the CBE while they are figuring out next steps in learning. The CBE is working on finding ways to help us connect online after spring break. We miss you terribly. We love each of you.

A few things:

  • Students can access their google account from home. In google drive, we have created a folder called,  Students Room 52 and 53. In this folder, we have shared both groups' performances for Evergreen Theatre. If you would like to view it, please ask your child to log into their google drive account. We are especially excited to share the performance with Ms. Jenn's class as parents didn't get to see this performance. The dress rehearsal was really good. Evergreen Theatre was a great learning experience for all of us. Thank you to parent council for funding this fantastic residency.
  • Ms. Jenn and Ms. Tanya are available via email and we can talk about using google hangout (video chatting via your school account) to connect. We are waiting for the CBE to share with us how they would like us to continue our learning experience together. We are happy that our year didn't actually end and that we can still work together; it'll just look different.
  • On top of the resources the CBE shared, we would like to remind you to check out the page of web resources on the blog to support your learning. There are also the Canadian Reader (grade 4) and the What in the World (grade 5) in google drive that you have access to.
  • Finally, spring break is next week. It is ok to wait until March 30th before you look at doing any school work. It will wait.

A twitter thread from Alison Van Rosendaal you mind find comforting about learning right now.

"Take rest; a field that has rested give a bountiful crop" ~ Ovid

Here's another quick and easy way to relax:
1. Sit as comfortably as you can.
2. Breathe deeply and naturally. In and out. In and out. Spend about a minute just breathing.
3. Think of a word or phrase - something totally stress free. Examples: "blue sky," "soft rain," "pillow," "ocean."
4. Repeat your word or phrase over and over in your mind as you continue to breathe naturally. Eventually it will become meaningless - just sounds.
5. Do this for 3-5 minutes.

Today I'll practice a relaxation technique.

Riddle

I am always on the table, but you don't get to eat me. What am I?

Math Puzzle

This puzzle uses the area model. Can you solve it?

This puzzle is based on the multiplication table. Can you solve?

FYI: Ms. Harrison and I packed up all your stuff including your shoes. Everything in bagged up. These are the shoes I couldn't remember who they belonged to. These shoes will not be packed in your bag if they are yours. We don't know the plan for you to gather your things, but when you do, please check that the shoes in your bag are actually yours :) and if any of these are your shoes, you will have to add them to your bag.

Hello room 52 and 53 families,

We apologize for another email from us today however, we are wondering if our wonderful parents could pass this on to their child.

Hello Students!

We miss you and thought it might be nice to say a little hello in the digital world; a quick connect before spring break.

We are experimenting with Google Hangouts/Meet and have sent you an invitation to join a video call with us. We were thinking anytime between 8:30 and 9:30am tomorrow morning, March 20. In order to join our video call, you will need to log into your @educbe.ca account and go to your gmail. Here you will find an invitation from Ms. Jenn. When you open the invitation, look for "Join Hangouts Meet" and click on the link. This should connect you to the video conference. We believe you can use a computer, ipad, tablet, or phone. Remember, we are testing and it might not work for everyone at this time.

Send us an email if you get stuck and we will try to help you troubleshoot. If you can't make it, don't worry. We will try again on another day.

Until tomorrow...

Stay healthy everyone!

Ms. Jenn and Ms. Tanya

"The sweetest of all sounds is praise." ~ Anonymous

Doesn't it feel wonderful when someone gives you a compliment? Pass those good feelings on by paying a compliment yourself. Tell you teacher his tie looks great. Let your dad know that, in your eyes, he's the world's best cook. Send a note to your grandma saying how much everyone admires the sweater she sent you for your birthday. (Be genuine and sincere so people know you really mean  what you say.) Try to compliment at least one person each day.

Today I'll give someone a compliment.
